LiFePO4 Battery Technology
What is LiFePO4?
LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) is the safest and longest-lasting cathode chemistry in the lithium-ion battery family. At ZBS Electronics we offer a LiFePO4 battery option across most of our emergency lighting and exit sign luminaires as an alternative to conventional Ni-Cd and VRLA batteries.
LiFePO4 advantages in emergency lighting
Long cycle life
LiFePO4 cells withstand significantly more charge-discharge cycles than Ni-Cd and lead-acid batteries. That means fewer battery replacements over the service life of the luminaire and a lower total cost of ownership.
Wide operating temperature range
In car parks, roof spaces, warehouses and production areas where temperatures vary seasonally, LiFePO4 batteries retain their capacity better. Their thermal stability at high temperatures is superior to that of lead-acid and lithium-cobalt chemistries.
High safety
The iron phosphate cathode structure greatly reduces the risk of thermal runaway in the event of overheating or a short circuit. This is a critical safety advantage for luminaires installed on the escape routes people use to evacuate.
Lighter and more compact
It provides lower weight and volume for the same capacity, which allows slimmer luminaire designs — particularly in suspended ceiling and decorative applications.
Low self-discharge
Capacity loss occurs more slowly in batteries left unused for long periods, increasing reliability in emergency lighting systems that are rarely called upon.
